How We Came To Be
The Silver Linings Trust is a non-profit organization that started off with a school that offered elementary and high school classes to students with Special Needs. After realizing that students often had nothing to do after completing their high school education with the school, Sunshine Zimbabwe Project was formed to provide vocational and life skills training for individuals between 18 to 65.
The main purpose of the Centre was to provide individuals with Special Needs (mainly intellectual disabilities) with skills training that would allow them to be as independent as possible, whether this ends up with the individual being employed or starting their own business or finding a healthy routine that adds value to their life even if they may never be completely independent from the care and assistance given by family and friends.
It was at this point that the Centre decided to offer more advanced skills training in the form of professional courses and City and Guilds granted the Centre their approval to operate as a “one of a kind Special Needs vocational Centre” . With time, we also started to accommodate students without Special Needs making us an inclusive vocational Centre.
The official opening of the Greendale Campus in 2022
The City and Guilds Centre was founded in 2016 and was based in Borrowdale. As the Centre outgrew its first home, another facility in Greendale was donated and customized by efforts from the Beit Trust and various donors to make it suitable for conducting lessons. The new Centre in Greendale was officially opened on Friday, 29 April 2022, by Sir Andrew Pocock (The Beit Trust), accompanied by David Long.
What Is So Special About Us?
As mentioned above, we are a one-of-a-kind institution, offering quality and professional skills training to every type of student. We are the only City and Guilds Centre offering such in Southern Africa. Some of our exceptional features are:
– We do not have pre-entry requirements, we simply assess the student’s ability to successfully complete the course, upon approval, we register and enroll them.
– We offer City and Guilds foundational courses that are exclusive to specialized Centres, these are ideal for students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.
– We use various methods of assessments mainly, oral questioning and practical demonstration of skills. These are captured on video and pictures and presented as evidence to verify that our students qualify to be awarded with a qualification. This is ideal for students who struggle with reading and writing.
– We offer conducive examination environments where necessary, scribes for those who struggle with reading and writing and extra time for learners who have been medically assessed to require such services.
– Our Industry partners play a huge role in providing practical, realistic and professional work experience for our students.
